my birthday celebration is over. no, not just because it's past my birth date. Today my grandma passed away. It was time for her, we knew she wouldn't live much longer, but i guess no one really believed it was time. 2 years ago, we all thought it was her time too, but she somehow managed to survive for another 2 years. my dad was telling my grandma the last few minutes she was still with us, that, 'don't worry, your youngest son has finally found a possible wife. you can go in peace now." and she did.
i was really close to my grandma. not in the past few years, but i grew up with her. she took care of me for 7 years, during the most crucial growing up years. you know, the years where all you wanted to do was go out and play in the street and you had too much fun that you didn't have time to eat or wouldn't want to waste precious fun time to stop and eat. well, my grandma was there to make sure i ate and was healthy. she used to pick me up everyday from school when i used to live in irvine.
i like to the tell this story of how lucky i was to always be around a grandmother who would take such good care of me. up until i was about 6? i can't remember, but my grandma on my mom's side would take care of me. one day, my grandma on my dad's side came over from vietnam. my grandma on my mom's side decided to visit all her children all over california. she took 2 weeks off, while my other grandma took care of me. my grandma came back home from her vacation and a few days later, she passed the "job" over to my other grandma. i always just like to see it as me being so lucky to have always had someone to care for me while my parents worked. even though i was a snobby little spoiled brat growing up, (and maybe am sometimes) i hope my grandma knew how much i appreciated and loved her for all those years she took care of me. there was always a language barrier, and most of the time i could only respond to her with a nod, smile and a 'gia'. my grandma liked to tell stories, stories about her life in vietnam, her marriage, and family. i always understood her stories, words of wisdom and advice, i just never knew how to respond. well, i'll remember the last things she said to me when i saw her last week. "don't marry early." you don't have to worry grandma, i don't think i'll be getting married anytime soon. neither will my cousins. but maybe my uncle. soon.
rest in peace grandma.

Surprise! Surprise? Surprise.
this weekend i turned 12, i mean 21.
What a great surprise party. I really was surprised, I was still in pjs and was about to start cleaning the garage and do laundry when vanessa walked in my room and was like,
"hey what's up? can you help me bring stuff in."
"um...hey, what are you doing here?"
even with that phone call from abbie, i didn't really think much. she was like, "hey, peter called with some number about something in irvine." um...i don't know. whatevs.
marie, you're lucky i didn't read your blog. or i'm lucky i didn't read your blog.
the pinata was great, especially when it came to life.
the food was great.
the candles were great.
the ping pong tournaments were great.
the presents were great.
the friends are great.
i can't wait till my real birthday.
