Well I think I'm going to call it a night. I feel so behind already. I think I'm taking a gazillion courses. Let's see, there's physiology, biochemistry, developmental genetics, gross anatomy, OP&P (that's osteopathic principles and practices), histology and clinical skills. I think those are it.For those who don't know what I'm studying, I'm studying to be a D.O., that's Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. That's a physician who incorporates a holistic approach and preventitive medicine into their practice. Well something like that. So, in OP&P, we basically perform musculoskeletal manipulations to the body in order to relieve certain...pains (for lack of better word). Today was our first day and it was pretty awesome. We learned some kneading and stretching techniques for the back to help relieve certain stresses. Let me just say I'm going to love this class once we get deep into the semester. Come Thanksgiving, wait, I won't be home for that. Come Christmas, anyone with some back aches, neck aches, etc. come see me!
Gross anatomy was pretty awesome too. The cadavers were kind of shocking initially, they didn't really seem like humans, but they sort of did at the same time. I guess it's good that they don't look "normal" at all. Makes taking the de-humanizing part of it so much better. We have a female cadaver and we named her "Dolly" because she had on some makeup and the embalming or post-mortum stresses gave her some rosey cheeks.
We have a pretty cool ventilation/suction system in their, "state of the art" they say. It keeps the fumes rather mild. Basically, the ventilation system is in the table, and sucks the fumes right off the body, barely giving it enough time to circulate up to our noses. Pretty sweet.
Next week, we get started on our clinical skills and we take turns going to the clinics and we observe and work on our skills with patients and other health professionals. I think it's pretty cool they let us get in the clinic so soon. Expose us early to what we're gonna be doing a couple years down the line.
Ok, well now that I've blogged so much and ya'll are bored as heck, I'm heading home and heading to bed!

ooo.. cadavers. reminds me of "tru calling". you know, that show with eliza dushku. it was a very good, well written show. no one watched it but me though and that's usually not enough to stay on the air.
so my body is kind of sore from playing flag football with the family, you can help me out with that?
